von Braun´s Review
How is it that a 32-year-old car has only 8819 km on the odometer?
On May 21, 1987, a successful property developer from Danderyd walked into Bertil Boström’s office at Europeiska Motor in Stockholm. He placed his order and received confirmation for this Ferrari Testarossa. Delivery was estimated for the following year, 1988. This was a time when real-estate companies and developers often made huge profits. The property market had reached an historic all-time high, fuelled by fictitious increases in value and a deregulated credit market surrounding housing and real estate. Alongside bankers and financiers, people celebrated and toasted with Champagne daily as gravel was rapidly transformed into gold.
Shortly after Enzo Ferrari’s death in August 1988, the order backlog and waiting list for new Ferraris in the small country of Sweden is said to have exceeded 200 cars. If you were lucky enough to buy a car, you could sell it on for double the price. Money was flowing, and now everyone wanted to invest in one or several Ferraris, regardless of whether they were actually interested in sports cars. With the legendary racing and sports-car icon now gone, many were convinced that any car bearing Ferrari’s name would rise in value…!
History, however, had other plans. Around the turn of the decade in 1990, everything shifted quickly. Swedes and Europeans were about to witness the largest property crisis in history. The crisis became known as the “glass crash” due to all the buildings with glass façades that now stood empty. In major cities, some were worth only 20% of their loan value, and buildings were demolished or taken over cheaply by the banks. The banks’ generous lending was rapidly withdrawn, and massive assets were liquidated without mercy. Interest rates in Sweden rose to as high as 500% for a period, and the Swedish krona lost 30% of its value. In this chaos, Ferraris were often hidden away from bankruptcy estates or the public eye. No one wanted to show that they had been successful or involved in the “bubble” that had just burst. It would take several years before these sports and luxury cars would again see the light of day.
When the cars finally resurfaced, they had already become old. Their values were no longer as high, and extensive servicing was required before they could be used again. But thanks to all this tragedy, several fantastic semi-classic Ferraris were preserved for future generations in like-new condition. This Testarossa has had only three owners after the original property developer who bought it new. It has been used very sparingly. It comes with a complete set of natural cuoio leather luggage, tailor-made to fit the boot and cabin compartments. Apart from a few pressure marks from being pushed around, it smells and feels exactly as a new Testarossa did when it was new. The car has been regularly cared for and maintained. In August 2017, at 7,469 km, the timing belt was replaced. In November 2021, at 8,270 km, the current owner delivered the car to von Braun Sports Cars for service, and in May 2025, the car returned again for another timing-belt replacement, during which the fuel-pressure accumulators were also replaced with two new units. Today, this is one of the very few cars in the world with such low mileage.
