1989-1994

Debut

Ferrari 348 was introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show in autumn 1989, replacing the popular 328. During the first years of production the waiting list for a purchase was several years just like on most luxury cars in the late 1980's. The model was first introduced as a coupe (TB) and targa (TS).

Facelift

In 1993 the convertible (Spider) was introduced. The lower part of the body and the engine bonnet was originally painted matte black on all TB and TS. In 1993 when the spider was introduced there was a facelift also for the coupe and targa including a increase in power from 300 to 320 hp. The model names changed into GTB and GTS. The lower parts of the body were no longer black painted and from 1993 model you find a small chrome horse in the front grille and a small frame around the grill. The rear end also got a chrome horse on the back instead of the black horse.

Unlike the F355 the 348 never could be ordered with painted targa. The 348 Spider has a manually operated soft top.

The engine was largely a construction of aluminum; both the block and the tops were made of aluminum while the cylinder liners were made of steel treated with Nicasil. Cooling fans were mounted behind the doors and got air through the large air inlets in the doors. Bosch Motronic M 2.5, both controlled ignition injection. 348 were fitted with 17-inch wheels to accommodate the then large ventilated brake discs.
